Villena

Villena is a municipality in the Valencian Community, located in the north of the province of Alicante.

As a tourist attraction, the city is crowned by the Atalaya Castle, a Mediterranean fortress that once marked the border between kingdoms. In March, Villena celebrates its Medieval Festival, where visitors can enjoy the National Championship of Medieval Combat.

Another iconic stop is a visit to the Chapí Theatre, which serves as the cultural epicenter of the Alto Vinalopó region. It is named after the local composer Ruperto Chapí.

A testament to Villena’s rich history can be found in the Municipal Museum, home to its famed Treasure, which includes pieces over 3,000 years old. Villena’s frontier character—as a crossroads between the Meseta and the Mediterranean—has directly influenced its local cuisine. As such, its recipes clearly reflect both Mediterranean and Manchegan culinary traditions, with garden-fresh produce being its greatest treasure.
