Elche, in the Valencian Community, is renowned for its impressive palm grove, declared a World Heritage Site. The city’s Palmeral—a unique cultural landscape of outstanding universal value—is at the heart of an intensive horticultural irrigation system established by Elche’s Islamic founders over a millennium ago. Neither the city nor its inhabitants can be understood without this historic palm grove, which has shaped its urban landscape for more than a thousand years and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2000. With over 200,000 specimens and some 50,000 more in the municipal nurseries awaiting planting, Elche’s palm grove is the largest in Europe. The city also boasts a rich history, with monuments such as the Basilica of Santa María and the Puçol School Museum. Elche is likewise famous for the Lady of Elche. Moreover, its warm climate and proximity to the beaches of the Costa Blanca make it an ideal destination for enjoying both nature and culture.
